We utilize a variety of different scanners and methods to digitize books depending on the needs of each client. In order to capture the highest quality color or greyscale images we may use overhead planetary scanners, robotic book scanners, sheet-fed, flat-bed or book-edge scanners.
Bound books that must be kept in tact are scanned using specialized non-destructive book scanning equipment by trained archival technicians. Each book is carefully placed in V-shaped cradles and flattened with a glass plate. A high megapixel camera captures each image from above, eliminating blurriness and curvature at the spine. Our robotic, automatic page turning scanners minimizes operator handling, allowing us to digitize even the most fragile of texts without causing damage.
For less critical books, Semi-Destructive book scanning can be used. This involves carefully cutting the bindings so that the pages can be scanned on a higher speed, sheet-fed or flat-bed scanner. No matter which method you prefer, the outcome is a high quality digital book containing appropriate metadata, that can be electronically accessed and used for any intended purpose.
We aim to achieve the highest possible image quality. All scanned pages are reviewed by our quality assurance specialists who ensure that every image meets our quality standard. Poor quality images, cut-offs and inconsistencies are flagged and re-scanned as necessary.
Quality verified book images are then converted to the file type of you choice. Your digitized books can be delivered as fully searchable PDF files, EPUB, MOBI or even editable word documents. We can also bookmark and index each chapter or specific sections so you can easily access the information you need quickly.

The Smooth Photo Scanning facility is located in Lodi, NJ, just outside of NYC, and is equipped with several security features to ensure the safety of your documents and data. Our offices are protected with a security alarm system with emergency response and 24-hour video surveillance. We also have a sprinkler and fire alarm system in place.
We have all the necessary liability and data breach insurance as well as Valuable Paper and Records insurance. All of our employees are bonded, bound by a confidentiality agreement and are specially trained in document conversion procedures designed to conform with data compliance regulations.
